Our High School Counselors have been trained in an AODA Brief Intervention program called SBIRT, which research shows to be the most effective program model that is currently available. Students can be referred to our School Counselors via peer referral, staff referral, SST referral, parent referral, or self-referral. Upon referral, School Counselors meet with students to address the concern brought forward and if the student is in agreement, the Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral to Treatment Model process starts with utilizing a screening tool. This screening tool assesses the risk of student behaviors and social/emotional problems, giving the School Counselors baseline data on where to start working with the student. Afterward, brief intervention (2 to 4) meetings are scheduled. This model is a risk-reduction model, incorporating student strengths as they set goals each meeting. If brief intervention is not successful, then the student would be recommended for other community supports to address their AODA concerns.
