After completing a unit on homelessness in 2017, a group of concerned 7th grade students had the idea to create a school food pantry. With the help of their teacher Mrs. Kamke, Feeding Our Future was launched. The food pantry originally serviced the middle school, then grew to include the high school, and now has expanded to servicing the elementary school!
The goal of the program is to ensure that students do not go hungry on the weekends. Throughout the week, Mrs. Beinemann works with special needs students to secure, organize and pack bags of food. On Fridays during the school year, the bags are placed in food-insecure students’ lockers to be taken home for the weekend. Most bags contain a minimum of two breakfast entrées, two dinner entrées, and two snack items. Menu items are child-appropriate and vary depending on the donations received.
In addition to providing food on the weekends, the food pantry also makes snacks available if teachers need to provide snacks for needy students during the school day.
